LITSCO Projects - Manhasset Public Library

Transforming Manhasset's landmark library from design to reality

The Village of Manhasset, N.Y., still reflects the look and atmosphere of an era when grand homes first appeared along the Gold Coast of Long Island's north shore.  That's why the architectural firm of Burton Behrendt Smith designed the town's new library to capture this area's classic style.

It chose the natural appearance and durability of Follansbee TCS II Terne Coated stainless steel for all exterior metal components.  Beyond its own appearance, stainless steel would complement the structure's ample use of brick and interesting design elements.

Project name: Manhasset Public Library -- Manhasset, N.Y.
Project size:  8,000 square feet, metal roofing; 2,000 square feet, façade; 600 feet, cornice and gutter.
Project dates: November 2003 -- December 2005
Architect:  Burton Behrendt Smith, P.C., Bayshore, N.Y.
Installer:  The Jobin Organization Inc., Farmingdale, N.Y.
Material: Follansbee TCS II Terne Coated stainless steel
Components:  LITSCO's Streamline® systems including snap-on coping, designer gutters, siding panels, flush panels and standing seam roofing panels.

At LITSCO, we worked with the architects and the installer, the Jobin Organization, to refine the library design.  We developed a total solutions package to tailor, fabricate and deliver every stainless steel element.

We helped Jobin work as efficiently as possible by developing shop drawings of intricate roof sections.  We also helped perfect the look and construction of the library's impressive entranceway.

Throughout the project, by combining our metal fabrication skills and extensive design and construction expertise, we played a key role in fashioning this landmark library's striking exterior.

When the architects contacted us in 2003 to help perfect their design, we suggested integrating many of our Streamline® systems including snap-on coping that eliminates exposed fasteners; deeper, heavier designer gutters that hold a substantial amount of water inside a cornice style front; siding panels inside the parapet wall; and flush panels and standing seam roofing panels in other areas.

We created decorative fascias, window frames and column covers.  We also developed shop drawings of roof sections to help the installer work as efficiently as possible.

We relied on our in-house computer technology to create patterns for the many individual construction pieces.  Our technicians used plasma cutting tools to cut these pieces precisely from stainless steel sheets.  We also created mock-ups of intricate designs so both installer and architect could see the end result well in advance and make changes.

Throughout installation, our fabrication shop maintained close communication and coordination with the installer.  A steady flow of material to the jobsite enabled Jobin to keep the job moving smoothly.

Late in the project, we designed and fabricated all materials to cover the library's intricate entranceway.  This called for the customized integration of many design elements including fascias, curved flashings, soffits and column covers.

During each phase of this project, LITSCO applied modern materials and technology to help fashion a structure that reflects old-world craftsmanship.

By combining sheet metal fabrication expertise with extensive design and construction know-how, we helped to create the striking exterior of Manhasset's landmark library. Seen here, the prominent metal work on the library's third floor, its towers and front entry -- including entry columns clad in natural patina finish TCS-III -- offset the lower floors' brick exterior.

Our Streamline® sheet metal products, including decorative corbel brackets and designer gutter with a cornice style face seen here, helped create the Manhasset Library's classic look.

LITSCO fabricated the special details for the Manhasset Library's window frames and dormers. The top fascia includes decorative circle cut-outs.
